Today's AgendaThe seminar prewrite guidelines can be found on the student reading guide. I’ve also linked it directly on this agenda below. I’ve included a copy of the entire student reading guide for you in the sub folder if you want a hardcopy. AGENDA
SEMINAR Pre-Write InstructionsSeminar PrewriteFor this seminar, I am just asking you to answer two questions. We’ll then use a slightly unique seminar format to hopefully help us focus our discussion and thus understanding on the novel. I’d also encourage you to scope out the “Additional Questions” below to help focus your reading of the end of the novel.
QUESTION #1: Go back through the novel and reread just the poems. Write a short summary of the basic storyline within those poems (bullet points are fine. don’t spend too long on the summary) Then, answer this question: How does Tayo’s own journey parallel those of the poems? For this question, you can either summarize in general how his journey throughout the novel is similar OR pick 1-2 poems and zoom in on what is happening to Tayo at that point in the novel and how that relates. QUESTION #2: On page 243, the final poem concludes with the repetition of the line, “It is dead for now” with the implication that the witchery could return. Thus, there is a sense that we need to learn from Tayo’s journey, from this novel, how not to repeat the mistakes that brought on the witchery either in the world or within ourselves. This gets to the heart of HEALING. Then, on the last page of the book, Silko writes, “Sunrise/Accept this offering,/Sunrise”. So, the core question for our seminar is as follows: What is Silko offering to us to help us heal that which may have caused un-wellness in ourselves and/or the world? In other words, what is the main lesson we are to learn from this text about how to heal? To answer this question, I’d like you to pick THREE passages from the novel, at least one of which needs to be from between pages 186 to the end of the novel. And using those passages, defend your answer to that question. Thursday, 12/2: Seminar Format:
Additional Questions for the end of the novel (just for food for thought! These may help focus you as you read and prepare for seminar)
